As the brand started on the beautiful island of Fernando de Noronha (a tiny island located between Brazil and Africa) and the island’s unique vibe inspired the brand, BUYA was named after the little Mabuya lizard that lives there, capturing the island's lively spirit.
When we were searching for the right name, we found out that "BUYA" also carries those meanings… In Zulu, "Buya" means "to build" or "to create," and it can also mean "to make" or "to develop." Overall, it’s about growth, progress, and bringing ideas to life. Plus, "Buya" is a slang term from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) that shows excitement or approval—kind of like saying "yes," "awesome," or "great."
Seems perfect, right!?
